6 Common Central Air Conditioner Problems in 2022

Can you image a world without air conditioning? We can’t. At TechnoTemp, we know that having a seamlessly working air conditioner in the summertime is pure bliss. But sometimes, things happen. Here are the 10 most common central air conditioner problems in 2022, and how to fix them.

1. Air Conditioner Runs All The Time

Is it bad that the AC runs 24/7? With central air conditioners, there’s a cycle than turns on and off several times every hour to maintain the temperature setting you want. If it’s running all the time – there could be a problem.

Fix it: The first step is to change your air filter. This should be done every 1-3 months for peak AC performance. Check out our selection of filters here. If that doesn’t work, it could be a leak or in need of a cleaning. Or it could be really old. The good news is, we can fix it for you, and make sure your AC unknit is more energy-efficient than ever.

2. Refrigerant AC Leak

If your old AC is using Freon, we’ve got bad news. Canada is on a widespread mission to stop Freon use, and it’s becoming more expensive to buy and harder to find. With central AC systems, the Freon in there doesn’t get used up unless there’s a leak.

Fix it: Call a professional

3. Air Conditioner Water Leak

Sometimes, you might notice a puddle of water under your AC’s outdoor condenser unit. This is normal if the leak only happens with the AC on, especially on hot days. But if it’s an ongoing leak and the amount of water is large, there may be a problem.

Fix it: Change your filter if it’s wet or clogged. Check it on mild days with the temperature above 16 degrees C. If the leak is still there, give us a call for a tune-up.

4. Air Conditioner Makes Loud Noises

ACs are meant to make some noise – especially when you start it up. A soft hum and an occasional murmur are normal. But if the noises are notably loud, or there’s a sudden new noise, there could be a serious problem.

Fix it: Blocked airflow can create a symphony of unwanted music. Change your filter first, and if that doesn’t work, try to figure out where the noise is coming from and call us for a repair.

5. Air Conditioner Not Cooling

Probably the worst issue of all is when your AC unit doesn’t cool down the temperature! There’s a plethora of reasons for this.

Fix it: You’ll have to go through this process step by step. First, check that your thermostat is on Cool not just On. Then you want to make sure your windows and doors are closed, so that no air is being leaked out. After that, change the filter and clear off the outside condenser unit…washing the fins gently. If all else fails, it may be a leak or mechanical issue. We can come in and inspect it, to make sure you get that cool breeze you so desperately need.

6. Air Conditioner Trips Circuit Breaker

Central air conditioners need a lot of power, and your electrical system must be able to accommodate. If the AC is tripping up the circuit breaker, it means it’s using a lot of amps – more than the breaker can handle. The reason the breaker trips, is to protect your home from a fire hazard and electrical overcurrent.

Fix it: DO NOT ignore this issue. Do NOT try to reset the breaker. The issue is most probably due to a refrigerant leak or failed component. You’ll need to call a qualified AC technician to do the repair.
